Project Overview

The Métis National Council (MNC) Historical Online Database is a web interface to archival documents relevant to the historical Métis Nation.

The Challange

The client had an existing FileMaker Pro database containing multiple sets of archival documents relating to the Métis nation. These documents needed to be searchable and the high resolution archival documents needed to be displayed. In addition, new family relationships needed to be inferred from the documents.

The Process

We:

• worked closely with the client to establish a data migration stratagy and schema.
• consulted on image scanning and post-processing.
• wrote a java web application to search and display the data.
• used Zoomify (a flash-based image viewer) to display the archival documents and also provided a pdf version for printing.

The Outcome

The client was very satisfied and the database is used by the Métis community to establish status and family relationships. The zoomified archival documents have since been used in court cases.
